How to Use an External Hard Drive for Windows on a Computer

    • 1). Position the external hard drive. Set the base upon a flat service that is away from any heat sources. It should also be placed in an area that is child- and pet-proof.

    • 2). Connect the external hard drive. Plug one end of the power adapter into the external hard drive base and the other end into an outlet. Connect the adapter end of the USB cable into the base and the other end into an available USB port as well.

    • 3). Find its location. Click the "Start" button and view "My Computer." The external hard drive will either be listed as Drive E or F.

    • 4). Transfer the files. Copy and paste files from your primary C drive into the external hard drive. You may also drag and drop files into the external folder as well.

    • 5). Disconnect the external hard drive. Right-click the "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" icon on the "Start Menu." Select the name of the mass storage device and remove the USB cable when prompted.
