How to Draw Men's Faces
- 1). Draw an oval. Because it's going to make up the entire face, draw it the size you want the man's face to be.
- 2). Use your ruler to divide the oval into five equal vertical sections, which will help you place the features. Then, divide the oval in half horizontally. Divide the lower half of the oval in half again. Be sure to draw all of the lines lightly. (You'll erase them for your finished drawing.)
- 3). Sketch in the eyes, including the irises and pupils. They should appear halfway between the top and bottom of your oval, in the second and fourth vertical sections. The general shape of the eye is an almond, but you can change the shape to express the individual appearance of the man you're drawing. Add an eyelid fold above the eye to create realism.
- 4). Add the nose. The bottom of the nose should fall at the mid-point of your oval. Just draw the nostrils and the wings of the nose in to make it look realistic.
- 5). Create the mouth. A man's mouth is halfway between the bottom of the nose and the end of the chin and should be centered under the nose. Men's lips are often less full than women's lips, and the top lip is slightly smaller than the bottom lip.
- 6). Place the ears so the tops line up with the center of the eyes and the bottoms line up with the bottom of the nose. You can draw these as dish-like shapes that slightly cup out away from the sides of the face.
- 1). Add eyelashes to the eyes. Interestingly, men's eyelashes are generally longer than women's eyelashes. However, if you draw too much attention to the eyelashes, your face will look like a woman's rather than a man's.
- 2). Create eyebrows above the eyes. Make the eyebrows fairly close to the eyes and sketch in the individual hairs thickly. Create a rather straight shape to the eyebrows---an arched shape creates a more feminine look.
- 3). Shade in the cheekbones lightly. Men often have pronounced cheekbones. Classic male comic book superheros are an excellent source of inspiration for shading in your drawing's cheekbones, as these characters have exaggerated masculine features.
- 4). Sketch in additional details that create personality in the face. You may want to add wrinkles around the eyes or in the forehead to help indicate age and character. You may also want to emphasize the nasal labial fold, which runs from the edge of the nostril to the edge of the mouth, especially if you're drawing an older man. At this point, it can be helpful to look at photographs of men's faces.
- 5). Draw in the hair, including any stubble or facial hair. Keep in mind that hair on a man's head extends past the skull and so must extend past the oval you drew. You may want to cover the ears somewhat with hair as well for a more natural appearance.
- 6). Draw the neck and shoulders. The neck should be no thinner than the head to create a masculine impression, and the shoulders should be relatively wide. However, if you want to create the impression of a frail man, you can make the neck and shoulders smaller.
