S1000D™ Provides Potential For Cost Savings For Technical Documentation Processes

The S1000D™ technical documentation specification promises to hold many benefits for companies that develop technical publications. While the standard has already seen much use in Europe over the past several years, it is now gaining acceptance in the US, particularly in the military and aerospace industries.

Essentially, S1000D is a single multinational specification that provides standards and guidelines for the production, management and maintenance of technical publications and SCORM-compliant e-learning content. The standard was initially developed by the Association Europenne des Constructeurs de Matriel Arospatial (AECMA), which represents the common technical interests of the aerospace industries of 15 EU countries. Today, the standard is supported by the AeroSpace and Defence Industries of Europe (ASD), the Aerospace Industries Association of America (AIA) and the Air Transport Association.

S1000D can potentially make the process of creating technical publications easier and more cost-effective throughout the life cycle of complex equipment or machinery.

At the core of the specification is a different approach in data is organized and delivered. S1000D utilizes Data Modules which can be re-used and shared across multiple publications or data delivery platforms. The modules are stored in a Common Source Data Base (CSDB), where other assets such as images and multimedia are centrally stored and accessed.

Compared to the traditional technical documentation standards that utilize a document-centric approach, S1000D follows a more data-centric approach. Once authored, the data modules can be re-used in other publications or documents to create both linear and interactive content. This makes it especially effective for the creation of Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals (IETMs).
