    • 1). Unplug the electric lawn mower's power cord from the AC outlet. Place the cord next to you so that it can't be accidentally plugged back in.

    • 2). Loosen the two screws on the power switch on the handle of the lawn mower -- use a Phillips jeweler's screwdriver or a Torx screwdriver to do this, depending on the manufacturer of the mower. Pull the switch off the handle.

    • 3). Turn the knob on the multimeter so that it is against the "ohm" labeled text. Place one of the two probes connected to the multimeter against one of the two screws on the switch that has electric wires wrapped around it. Place the other probe from the multimeter against the other screw.

    • 4). Have an assistant plug the mower's power plug back into the outlet and flip the power switch to "On."

    • 5). Watch the needle on the multimeter swing back and forth in the panel. Let the needle settle so that it's tip can be read against the numbers printed on the scale in the panel. If a reading of roughly "0" (zero) is being read by the needle, current is passing through the electric wires; if the reading is not roughly "0" (zero), there is a problem with the electric wires and you need to troubleshoot the mower to discover the source of the problem.

    • 6). Have the assistant flip the switch off. Remove the probes from the switch. Unplug the mower's power cord from the outlet. Reattach the switch to the handle.
