How Does a Sprinkler System Work?
- All sprinkler system work by bringing water from a water source through pipework to a designated place. There are many types of sprinkler systems, such as the lawn system. This can be as simple as a hose attached to a sprinkler or as complicated as an entire piped system underground that is run by a control panel. There are also drip systems used to water hanging plants or misting systems that cool people off in hot climates. One of the most important sprinkler systems are fire sprinklers. These systems have extensive piping going through a building with sprinkler heads installed into each room. They are normally smoke activated and can prevent terrible fire damage--or even save lives.
- A fire sprinkler system can be one of the most important investments you make in your home. If a fire starts while you are sleeping, it will most likely be put out before you can wake up and see what all the commotion is about. These systems work by installing a network of piping in your home's walls and ceilings. These pipes are filled with water from your well pump or public water source. Then there is a sprinkler head attached to the pipes, normally in the center of each room's ceiling.
The heads work separate from each other by two different methods. One type uses seals that are melted when a fire starts. The other uses a small vile filed with a heat-sensitive gas. When expanded by the heat of the fire, it breaks and releases the valve that is holding back the water. When a fire starts, the heat quickly rises to the ceiling. That is why the fire does not have a chance to spread before the sprinkler system is flowing and putting out the fire.
Once the water is released, it lowers the core temperature of the fire and it goes out. Because each head works individually, only the room that is on fire receives the water. Therefore, there is no water damage to areas where there is no fire. These systems are also used extensively in commercial buildings. - A lawn sprinkler system is a series of pipes or hoses that are attached to a main water source and run throughout the lawn. Above-ground systems use a collapsible hose that has holes in it at certain intervals. You turn the water on at a central valve and it runs through the hose, forcing water out of the holes as it goes.
The underground system is a little more complicated. It has an entire network of piping under the ground with sprinkler heads in certain zones of the lawn. The central water system is controlled by an electronic timing device that is set for it to turn on and off at certain times of the day. The sprinkler heads are retractable and pop out of the ground when the water pressure comes through the pipes and pushes them above the ground level. Then, when the water pressure is stopped, the heads go back into the ground. That way you don't run over and destroy your sprinkler heads with the lawn mower. These systems can be very expensive, but if you don't like to water the grass or don't live in the home full time, they are well worth the investment. The underground systems are also use commercially for places like office lawns and golf courses.
