How to Draw Cartoons for Children
- 1). Decide what you are going to draw in your cartoon. It could be a character such as a cat or an object like a car. Tape an image of that character or object to a vertical surface like a wall so you can look at it while you draw.
- 2). Take a soft pencil like a 2B to draw the basic shapes that will represent the body, head and legs for your cat character. Draw an oval standing on one narrow end for the cat's body. Draw a smaller circle on top of the oval for the cat's head. Draw triangles on top of the head circle for the ears. Draw another oval for the nose inside the head circle. Draw two narrow ovals extending down from the head circle, and on top of the body oval for the cat's front legs.
- 3). Exaggerate the features of the cartoon by putting the focus on the eyes and mouth. If the character is grinning make it a big grin.
- 4). Create consistency by using the same style shapes with all of the cartoon characters. If the cat's head is round, the cat's owner should have a round head.
- 5). Play with proportions when creating a cartoon for children such as placing the mouth where the chin should be and the eyes where the nose should go.
- 6). Make a series of thumbnail sketches to determine the best angle. If possible, test the cartoon out with children before committing to a character or layout.
- 7). Add color to the cartoon by starting with main color, and then add shading with a darker color for shadows. Add lighter colors to highlight and show light.
