Building a Fence Gate
- 1). Measure the width of the opening in the fence. Cut two 2-by-4 inch boards to the width of the opening. These will be the top and bottom support boards.
- 2). Measure the height of the preexisting fence. Cut two 2-by-4-inch boards as long as the height of the fence. These will be the side support boards.
- 3). Lay out the four support boards on a flat surface. Arrange the support boards in a rectangle with the top and bottom support boards overlapping the side support boards. Use a framing square to make sure the corners are square.
- 4). Apply wood glue to the meeting surfaces of the support boards. Screw the boards together with decking screws after gluing them.
- 5). Position another 2-by-4-inch board across the rectangle shape diagonally. Draw a line on the board where it meets the corners of the rectangle. Cut the board to fit snugly inside the rectangle.
- 6). Place the diagonal board inside the rectangle. Glue and screw the board in place. This will be the center support board for attaching the panels.
- 7). Position the rectangle so that the center support board is on the bottom of the left side and the top of the right. Measure the width of the gate frame. Cut the necessary amount of panels from 1-by-2-inch boards.
- 8). Attach the panels to the gate. Begin by attaching the side panels first. Place a panel over the gate frame, perfectly in line with the side support boards. Attach the panel in place by screwing it to the top, bottom and center support boards. Repeat for each panel needed.
- 9). Secure the gate hinges and the latches to the gate and the fence. Hang the gate on the latches. Check if the gate is level and that it has plenty of room to swing open and closed. Adjust the gate as necessary.
