    • 1). Measure the opening between the two post that you left for your gate. Subtract 1 inch from this measurement to allow for the gate to open and close between the posts.

    • 2). Cut two 1-by-4-inch board to the final measurement determined in step 1. These will be the top and bottom boards of the gate.

    • 3). Measure the height of the fence from the bottom of the last rail or bottom of the slats up to the top. Cut two boards to this measurement.

    • 4). Place the side boards down parallel to each other, then place the top and bottom boards across them to form a rectangle. Drill 1 1/2-inch screws through the boards in the corners where they meet.

    • 5). Cut another board to fit between the top and bottom board at an angle. It will start at the top left side on the side board, just below the top board of the gate. It will run at a diagonal to the lower right corner, just above the lower board of the gate. Use a miter box to cut the board end with a 45 degree angle so that it will set flush with the top and bottom boards.

    • 6). Drill fence slats to the top and bottom boards with 1 1/2-inch screws. Use the same slats that are on the fencing.

    • 7). Attach the top and bottom hinges of the fence to one side of the gate. Drill in only one screw. Hold the gate up to the opening and drill the other end of the top hinge to the fence gate. Adjust the fence with a level and then drill in the bottom hinge to the post, as well as the rest of the screws on the top hinge. Finish by attaching the middle hinge.
