    • 1). Open the blade on the flat utility knife. The blade is usually no more than a couple of inches wide. A blade that is too wide may not work. After the blade has been opened, place the blade into the side of the iPod. It should fit inside of a small crack in the white (or black) plastic that protects the metal base around the machine.

    • 2). After the blade has been pushed in to the point at which it cannot go further, begin to slowly move the blade in a downward motion toward the inside of the iPod. Gradually push the knife in deeper. If done correctly, the metal that covers the iPod will begin to separate from the plastic slightly. This will leave enough room for the knife to be able to slide between the plastic and metal.

    • 3). Begin to move the knife downward slowly so that its blade starts to move upward (picture a lever). This should be done slowly to avoid breaking the plastic covering. There is an edge to the plastic that the knife should be able to grip.

    • 4). Listen for the "pop." Once that is heard, remove the knife from the iPod and set it to the side. Begin to pull out the plastic covering with your hands. As long as one side is out, the other side should also come out fairly easily.

    • 5). Replace the cover. After completing the work that needs to be done inside of the iPod, replacing the cover is fairly simple. Using your hands, slide one side of the plastic covering back into place at an angle. Once the covering is in place, begin to push the other side down. Make sure the first side does not move out of place. Push on both sides until a click is heard.
