How to Get Stumps Out With a Tractor
- 1). Dig away the soil around the stump to expose as much of the root system as possible. Saw through any roots you see, as close to the soil as possible.
- 2). Create an eco-friendly saltwater mix by mixing one part boiling water to two parts rock salt and pour this solution over the root system each day for three days. This will kill off the stump, making it easier to remove.
- 3). Check the "health" of the stump over the course of the three day period to ensure the salt mix is working correctly (the stump should look slightly gray and brittle.) If needed, repeat for another day or so until the stump is visibly ready.
- 4). Remove any large stones or debris near the stump resting in the path of the tractor.
- 5). Depending on your tractor, there are two ways to go about removing the dead or dying stump: with a push blade or by hauling it out. Install a push blade by following the kit's instructions if you don't already have one installed. If you plan on hauling the stump, wrap two tow chains to the rear hitch of the tractor and secure each chain with locks.
- 6). If using a push blade, drive the tractor slowly into the stump with the push blade leveled a few inches from the soil's surface. Push forward to rip the stump from the ground. Otherwise, wrap the ends of the tow chains together around the base of the stump and slowly drive forward to pull the stump up.
- 7). Once the stump is removed, burn it if allowed, following local burn laws, or cut it up to use as kindling.
