    Shooting Function

    • A camera's LCD screen provides a live, moving view of the current scene. The photographer looks at the back of the camera, at the LCD, and moves the camera around until the LCD frames the scene they want to photograph. To capture the image seen on the LCD, the camera's shutter button must be pressed.

    Features

    • The LCD provides a visual of camera menus, playback features and image framing for shots. During the shooting mode, the LCD also displays pertinent information including number of shots left, resolution settings, compression settings, exposure mode and displays an anti-shake indicator. The surface of some LCDs has an anti-reflective coating making it easier to view the screen outside in bright daylight.

    Screen Size

    • The size of an LCD screen varies depending on the size of the digital camera. LCD screens range from 1.5-inches to 3-inches diagonally. The resolution of LCD screens varies from 120,000 to 240,000 pixels.

    Benefits

    • Reviewing photographs, right after they are shot, is a key benefit when compared to the wait for film developing. If the subject has blinked or a person walked into the background, the photo can be re-shot. An LCD screen reduces the need to take many photos of the same subject to ensure that at least one turned out.

Rotating, cropping or turning images into black and white is possible on some digital cameras with use of the LCD screen. After the photos have been edited in the camera, they are ready to upload to a computer in the correct orientation (vertical or horizontal) and with minor editing.

    Types

    • Compact digital cameras and single lens reflex (SLR) cameras often have recessed, flat LCD screens built into the back of the camera. Larger point and shoot cameras with thick side-grips may feature an LCD screen that swivels, folds and flares out like a wing. These adjustments are popular for composing shots while holding the camera at arms-length above your head over a crowd or to photograph a baby crawling on the floor without stooping low.
