Many definitions of faith exist. There are numerous entities we can put our faith in. However, we should have faith in Jesus Christ. If you are having trouble with these concepts, then follow the discussion below as well as the next article in this series.

What Faith Is

Faith is a belief system that guides our decisions, as well as motivates us.

Everyone has some sort of faith.

Without it we would not feel comfortable believing anything or doing anything. For example, you get up in the morning confident that you have a job to go to and a way to get there.

If you do not have faith that you can keep your job, you will probably start looking for another job elsewhere. If you do not have faith that a road will be open and passable, you might find an alternative route to drive. Just turning the key in the ignition suggests you have faith that your car will start up and run.

Many people put their faith in scientific experts and scientific knowledge, rather than deity. Only secular knowledge guides their decisions and actions.

Where Will You Put Your Faith?

Review the decisions and actions of your past. Where have you put your faith? If you attend church and read scripture, this suggests you have some faith in deity. If you do not believe in God and do not attend church, you probably put your faith in secular knowledge.

Even if you do put your faith in secular knowledge, you probably have entities that you trust more than others.

It makes sense to put your faith in entities that have proven reliable in the past and you are certain will be reliable in the future. The best entity to put your faith in is one that knows everything, can do anything and is everywhere.

There are no human beings or human organizations that can meet this level of reliability. Faith in earthly entities will never yield perfect results.

Faith in Jesus Christ is a Sure Foundation

Heavenly Father and His Son, Jesus Christ are:
  • Omniscient: Know everything.
  • Omnipotent: All powerful.
  • Omnipresent: Present everywhere at once.

Putting our trust in beings that contain these characteristics is the best and most reliable foundation.

Since we know very little ourselves, have very little power and can only be in one place at a time, our limitations suggests that putting our faith in earthly entities will not yield good results over time.

Even though we are less knowledgeable and have very little power or capacity, if we rely on someone or something that does, we can make good decisions.

Faith in Jesus Christ Means We Trust Him

Putting our faith in Jesus Christ means that we accept His instructions and His guidance on what we should do with our lives.

If we truly have faith in Jesus Christ, we will try and determine what His guidance is and then we will try and follow it. If we have trouble, or even if we fail outright, we continue to try, trusting that He will help us and eventually we will succeed.

Faith in Jesus Christ Means We Obey Him

When we can determine what Jesus Christ wants us to do; if we have faith in Him, we will follow his guidance, whatever it is, even if we cannot see the end result.

We continue doing what He wants us to do, because we are confident it is the right thing to do. Wavering in our resolve, suggests we do not have enough faith.

If our beliefs or actions suggest we lack faith, we need to somehow acquire it. If we follow His guidance for gaining and strengthening our faith; this will demonstrate the faith we do have as well as position us to gain more.

How Should Knowing All This Change My Life?

We should review our decisions and actions and determine what this says about our faith.

We should want to place our faith in Jesus Christ.

We should want to learn more about faith and how we can increase our personal faith.
