How to Rebuild a Master Boot Record
- 1). Insert the CD or DVD disk into the computer's drive. Reboot the machine. The startup process boots the Windows installation screen.
- 2). Enter the language, time zone and currency settings. Click "Next" to navigate to the next screen.
- 3). Select "Repair your computer" by clicking the "R" key on your keyboard. In the next screen, use the arrow keys on the keyboard to select "Command Prompt." This brings you to a DOS command shell.
- 4). Type "Bootrec.exe" into the DOS command prompt and press "Enter." It may take several seconds to fix the master boot record. Once the program is finished, remove the Windows installation CD or DVD and reboot the machine.
