While Idera is mainly known for its paid tools, it also offers free tools that you can download directly from the company's website. These tools include the SharePoint and SQL check. The SharePoint monitors the overall performance of your SQL server, and it will send you an email if your system does encounter a problem. The SQL check allows you to monitor the performance metrics of a single SQL server. It acts just like a screen saver, but it gives you information on your agent jobs, processes and error logs.

The SpiceWorks free SQL server monitoring tool offers you a comprehensive package of free tools. You can monitor different servers on your system, and this program will automatically detect all installed servers. You can create widgets of the items that you want to monitor. This program will monitor critical system processes, including connection speed and overall health. You can then view this information in charts, graphs or reports. It also provides you with the latest information about your servers.

Microsoft, the creator of the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2, also provides you with free SQL tools that work with your Microsoft server.
