When to Add Additional Memory for a Computer

    • 1). Observe the operation of the computer when several tasks are running at once, such as when the email software, web browser, music player and a couple of applications are loaded at the same time. If the computer slows dramatically during this, it may be time for more RAM.

    • 2). Run the Resource Monitor utility in the Windows 7 Control Panel under "Performance Information and Tools > Advanced Tools." Click the "Memory" tab and note the amount of memory in use compared with the amount of memory available. If the amount of available RAM is low, it may be time to add more RAM.

    • 3). Run the System utility from the Windows Control Panel to determine the amount of installed and usable RAM in the system. Determine the amount of RAM the motherboard will accept and the amount of RAM the operating system will support (see Resources). If the motherboard has room for more RAM and the operating system will support it, it may be a good idea to add RAM.
