How to Edge a Rock Flowerbed

    • 1). Clear any existing rock mulch from the edge of the flowerbed so that it doesn't fall into the area you will be working. You can simply rake in toward the center of the bed; if doing so might damage plants, shovel it into a bucket and set it aside.

    • 2). Dig a trench along the edge of the flowerbed that is slightly wider than the stone brick you plan to use. Set the soil that you remove to the side of the trench. Make the cut along the grass line as straight as possible. For straight edges, set stakes at the corners and tie a line between them to guide the trench. The trench should be deep enough that approximately 1 inch of each brick is elevated above the land surface to keep the rock mulch inside the bed. Burying a portion of the stone bricks helps keep grass from growing into the bed.

    • 3). Tamp the soil along the bottom of the trench until it is level along the entire length. Use a level to check the trench. Add a thin layer of pea gravel, if desired, to help stabilize the stone bricks and to keep them from sinking into the soil.

    • 4). Place the bricks end to end in the trench. Use the level or guide line to adjust the height of the bricks so that they are all the same. If necessary, add or remove soil or pea gravel as you work.

    • 5). Shovel some of the soil that you removed from the trench around the bricks, using a trowel, until all of the open space is full and level. Check your work with the level and pack the soil tightly. Spread the remaining soil evenly over the flowerbed; if the bed is still full of rock mulch, remove the soil from the area.

    • 6). Tap the bricks with a rubber mallet to make sure they are secure in the trench. Tamp the soil around the bricks, and cover the interior of the flowerbed with the rock mulch you removed before laying the edging or with new rock mulch. Rake the mulch smooth.
