- 1). Rinse out the cans thoroughly. Leave no residue of the contents of the can, as your plants may not react well to it.
- 2). Drill two holes in the bottom of each can. Use a 3/32-inch or 1/8-inch bit size. These holes are just large enough so the water can slowly seep out at a rate that keeps the plant roots wet, but not so large that the water will come pouring out all at once.
- 3). Dig a hole 1 to 2 inches deep, situated 4 to 6 inches away from the stem of the plant you wish to water, using the trowel. Be careful not to damage the stem or roots of the plant while digging.
- 4). Fill one of the cans you have prepared with water or fertilizer solution and insert it in the hole so the drip holes you drilled are on the bottom. Set the can in the hole so it sits 30 to 45 degrees off the vertical. Pile up dirt around the base of the can to hold it securely in place.
- 5). Set up one aluminum can near the base of each plant you need to water. Use the same procedure for each.
