Sweet-Smelling Flowers and Shrubs

    Sweet

    • Flowering plants that emit a sweet scent tend to produce narcotic, heavily fragranced blossoms. The foliage of aromatic vines, such as confederate jasmine, wisteria and goldflame honeysuckle, adds a decorative touch to trellises and fences, even as their beautiful blossoms fill the yard with fragrance. A single flowering shrub, such as a gardenia or a lilac, can perfume the entire garden when in bloom in the summer, while flower beds filled with nicotiana, jonquils and peonies add a delicate scent to the garden from early spring through fall.

    Fruity

    • Some flowers produce a scent that is vaguely reminiscent of ripe, sweet fruit, such as apples, raspberries, strawberries and plums. Add these fruity fragrances to the garden by filling planter boxes and flower beds with apricot- or coconut-scented geraniums, apple mint, pineapple mint and four o'clock. Alternatively, use shrubs such as the Moroccan broom or white oleander to create sweetly scented borders and hedges.

    Citrus

    • One whiff of a citrus-scented flower immediately brings images of lemon meringue pie and freshly squeezed orange juice to mind. Plants such as citrus-scented geraniums, angels trumpet, evening primrose, lemon balm and German flag add a fresh, crisp, citrus smell to springtime, while shrubs such as the sweet bay magnolia produce beautiful, plate-sized blossoms that fill the air with a heady, lemony perfume from early summer though the first fall frost.

    Gourmand

    • Gourmand flowers emit scents with dessert-like qualities, such as the fresh vanilla fragrance of heliotrope or the spicy scent of stock. Planting a mixture of annual and perennial flowers such as wallflowers, sweet William, carnations and nutmeg or ginger-scented geraniums with a combination of spring-blooming shrubs such as the Korean spicebush, summersweet and daphne will add a sweet, yet pungent perfume to the air all season long.
