    • 1). Acquire a pool vacuum. These are very common objects for pool and spa care, and should be found at any store which sells pool and spa hardware and maintenance chemicals. These vacuums can also be found through online vendors (see Resources).

    • 2). Connect your vacuum head to the vacuum pole. Connect any external skimming bags to the vacuum head.

    • 3). Fully submerge the vacuum hose underwater. This is referred to as "priming" the hose; it is the most important step when vacuuming a pool. The hose must be completely filled with water to create proper suction. Ensure that the hose is primed before connecting it to the suction line of your pool's water pump.

    • 4). Work your way across the floor of your pool being careful to keep the vacuum head completely submerged in water as you move. Remember to move slowly across areas with excessive amounts of sand to ensure the greatest level of suction.

    • 5). Backflush your pool pump once you have cleaned the pool floor to a satisfactory level. Do this by turning a knob near the outside of the pool pump. When in backflush mode the pump will spew water out of an exit tube to clear away dirt and debris and return the water pressure to a regular level. When the water in the pump is clean and clear of any debris, return the pump to its normal settings.
