    Appearance

    • Texas ash is a slow-growing tree that may reach up to 50 feet tall in ideal conditions, though it is more likely to reach a maximum height of between 25 and 30 feet. The tree produces dark green or olive green leaves that have pale green undersides. Leaves showcase stunning fall color, turning shades of orange, red and purple. Flowers emerge in spring and are followed by 1 1/2-inch long winged fruits, known as samaras.

    Care

    • Texas ash is a suitable landscape tree for USDA zones 5a to 9a, growing best in a bright, full sun location or a partially shaded location. Texas ash is tolerant of a wide variety of soil types, including sandy soils and clay soils. The tree is not picky about pH, though it prefers alkaline soils over acidic soils. Texas ash is exceptionally heat and drought tolerant. Texas ash is more drought tolerant than its close relative, the white ash (Fraxinus americana).

    Uses

    • Texas ash is often used for landscaping in Texas and Oklahoma and may be grown in similar climates. The tree works well as a city street tree, median or parking lot tree, thanks to its low care requirements and tolerance of harsh, urban conditions. Texas ash requires little water and is tolerant of soil compaction and air pollution. The tree does better in infertile, alkaline soils than in fertile soils.

    Maintenance

    • Texas ash may be propagated by seed. Sow seeds in fall or start indoors. Plant in moist, well-draining sand or perlite for one to two months at a temperature of approximately 41 degrees Fahrenheit. Young trees are also available via the nursery trade. Check trees for common pests such as aphids and remove dead growth with regular pruning. Fertilize several times a year during the growing season to encourage healthy new growth.
