- 1). Hold your flower pot or bowl at the level you would like it ultimately to hang from your ceiling or roof. With your other hand, measure approximately the distance from the center of your pot's bottom to the ceiling.
- 2). Cut three lengths of chain to the length that you measured with your wire cutters. If your chain is too thick to cut, you can bend the unwelded links apart and then bend them back in place with your pliers.
- 3). Use your pliers to bend open the last link on the ends of one of your lengths of chain. Slip your metal ring onto the inside of the open ring and then bend it closed with your pliers.
- 4). Repeat this process until the ends of all three chains are attached to the metal ring.
- 1). Lay your metal ring out on a flat surface with your metal chains evenly spaced on the ring, extending straight out from the center like the blades of a windmill. Place your pot or bowl directly on top of the metal ring.
- 2). Fill your bowl with moist potting soil and transplant any flowers or herbaceous plants you wish to display in your hanging planter.
- 3). One by one, thread the loose ends of your chains onto your split metal key chain ring. Pull the chains tight directly above the center of your pot and lift it up slightly. The hanging system should easily support the pot on all three sides.
- 4). To prevent the pot from slipping out of one of the gaps between the chains, hold your second split ring horizontally and thread it through a link on all three chains about halfway up from the pot. The diameter of your pot and the length of your chains will determine how high is sufficient, but if the split ring is placed at the appropriate height, it should keep the chains tight around the pot.
- 5). Hang your planter from your roof or ceiling using the metal hook in a location with plenty of sunlight that is shielded from the elements.
