How to Draw a Mayflower

    • 1). Sketch a 3-inch diameter circle on your paper. Make a dot near the center of the circle.

    • 2). Sketch six ovals of varying sizes from the center dot out to the sides of the circle. Make your lines very light, as you'll be erasing some later. These will be the leaves that will act as the background for the flowers, as they do in nature. It's all right if one overlaps the other.

    • 3). Lightly sketch three ¼-inch to ¾-inch stars near the center of the drawing, but apart from each other. Do this by drawing an upside down V shape with half-inch sides. Keep your pencil on the paper and extend a ½-inch line from the lower right side upward on a diagonal to about a ¼-inch below the tip of the upside -- down V. Draw a ½-inch line straight across the star and then turn your direction and connect the last point to the first point of the upside-down V.

    • 4). Shape the petals around the points of the stars by sketching soft ovals with rounded ends that go from the points of the stars to their centers. The petals may also overlap.

    • 5). Draw a little circle about 1/8-inch in diameter in the center of each flower. Draw very short stamen and fuzzy pistil in each of the circles.

    • 6). Erase the lines you used to make the stars, and the outer large circle sketch.

    • 7). Paint the leaves in dark green with visible center lines and darker colored shadings near the center of the plant to show that the flowers create shadows on the leaves. The stems between the flowers and the leaves are very short, so you do not have to indicate them at all.

    • 8). Paint the petals of the flowers in white. Let that dry and then paint pink or light blue striations on each petal, extending the delicate, nearly invisible lines from the center of the flower out to then ends of the petals.

    • 9). Paint the center of the flower dark yellow, with the pistil a shade darker color than the stamen.
