- 1). Turn off the IBM ThinkPad A31. Disconnect the power cable if it is in place.
- 2). Turn the IBM ThinkPad A31 over and remove the battery by sliding the battery release mechanism, which can be found beside the horizontal outline of the battery. Slide the battery out once it is dislodged by the release.
- 3). Remove the two keyboard-related screws on the bottom of the IBM using a Phillips head screwdriver. There is one beside the top of the battery compartment and one a couple of inches above this.
- 4). Turn the IBM ThinkPad A31 back over and move the now loose keyboard free of the computer casing. Take care with the flex cable, which will still partially connect the keyboard to the motherboard. Lift up on the socket that holds the cable in place and slide the cable out.
- 5). Remove the screws along the face of the laptop's screen. These screws will be covered with plastic seals initially, so pop these off with your fingers and then remove the screws with the Phillips head screwdriver. There will be two screws on the top of the bezel and an additional three on the bottom.
- 6). Remove the three screws on each side of the screen using the Phillips head screwdriver. These screws will already be visible and do not have seals.
- 7). Pry the bezel off the IBM ThinkPad A31. The bezel is the plastic perimeter around the screen itself.
- 8). Disconnect the two cables on the inverter board, which is the green circuit board on the bottom of the exposed IBM ThinkPad A31's screen. There is one on each side of the board. Each one can be simply unplugged.
- 9). Pull the loose screen away from the IBM ThinkPad A31's rear casing to reveal the LCD cable. Remove the adhesive strip holding this cable in place and then lift the screen out altogether.
