    • 1). Determine where you want the fire pit on the deck. You definitely don't want it under a roof or tree due to the fire hazard. The size of your deck is also going to determine the size of your fire pit. You don't want a pit so large that there is not enough room for people to move about comfortably to avoid burns or extreme heat.

    • 2). Place bricks or ceramic tile down in an area large enough to place the tire rim in the middle and have rocks around the rim. It is very important to use solid bricks so loose embers do not fall to the bottom and possibly through the holes in some bricks so as not to burn your deck.

    • 3). Place different-sized rocks around the rim or barbecue pit to hold in place and to add a rustic look. Build the rocks about halfway up the rim or barbecue pit bottom.

    • 4). Lay in wood and start a fire. Place a mesh grate or window screen over the top to stop wayward embers.
