How to Make Prop Blooming Flowers
- 1). Examine images of real flowers in magazines, books and online to get an idea of the appearances and structures of different varieties. Determine which specific types of flowers you want to create for use as props. Print or copy images of those flowers to use as guides when you are making the prop replicas.
- 2). Cut a piece of 20-gauge floral wire long enough to be the stem of the type of flower you wish to reproduce. Snip the floral wire with wire cutters.
- 3). Wind green floral tape around the wire, starting at the top of the wire and working your way down to the bottom. Tug on the floral tape as you wind it to release its adhesive properties. Cover the entire surface of the floral wire with the floral tape. Tear off the tape when you reach the bottom of the floral wire.
- 4). Draw the shapes of the leaves and petals of the flower you wish to reproduce on a heavy sheet of paper with a pencil. Cut out these shapes with scissors. Plan to use them as templates.
- 5). Decide whether you prefer to create your flower petals and leaves with tissue paper or with fabric. Note that tissue paper creates a finer, more delicate, yet slightly more rigid effect, while fabric appears less rigid and more heavy. Choose the material that will look best in the type of film, television, or stage setting you are creating.
- 6). Place the templates of the flower petals and leaves on sheets of tissue paper or pieces of fabric. Trace around the templates with pencil or, if using fabric, with chalk. Cut out the shapes with scissors.
- 7). Affix the leaves and petals to the wrapped wire stems with dabs of hot glue. Allow the glue to dry thoroughly before moving and arranging the prop blooming flowers.
