How to Fix Hayward Pool Pumps
- 1). Turn off and unplug the pool filter and pump and open the pump basket lid. Remove the skimmer basket above the pump and dump any debris from it, such as leaves, bugs or hair. Place the basket back in its place. Remove any dirt located in the impeller, which is directly below the basket assembly. Dirt is one of the most common causes of a malfunctioning pump.
- 2). Make sure there is plenty of water in the Hayward pump for it to prime itself. Hayward pool pumps are designed to prime themselves. Therefore, if the skimmer basket is not covered in at least 2 inches of water, add additional water to the pool with a bucket or garden hose. The water line should rest a few inches above the skimmer basket of your pump.
- 3). Check the pump impeller to see if it is damaged or loose. The impeller is one of the most important parts of the pump. The rotation created by the pump helps produce a vacuum-type setting that can suction water from the pool through the filtration system. The impeller should act like a fan blade. Tighten the impeller with an adjustable wrench if it seems loose.
- 4). Listen for unusual noises coming from the pump. Over long periods of use, the pump may start to produce high-pitched sounds. This may be a sign of poor performing bearings. The bearings will need to be replaced by taking apart the pump motor. Refer to the pump's user guide or contact a repair person for work on the bearings.
