How to Transplant Gas Plants
- 1). Choose a new site in full sun. Soil should have good drainage. Remove weeds and turn over the soil to a depth of 12 inches. Available space should accommodate a 2-1/2-foot-wide mature gas plant.
- 2). Add planting mix, leaving several handfuls for the bottom of the planting hole. Mix into the existing soil.
- 3). Dig a hole approximately 18 inches deep. Add the rest of the planting mix into the hole and mix with the existing soil.
- 4). Water the gas plant before removal and let the water drain. Place the spading fork approximately 18 inches from the base of the plant. Dig down as far as possible. Continue this process around the plant's circumference.
- 5). Loosen the plant and then lift it gently from its place. Lay the plant on its side on the tarp.
- 6). Pull the tarp with the gas plant to the new location. Carefully lift the plant into the hole. The plant should be even with the top of the soil.
- 7). Backfill with soil, adjusting the plant to the proper depth. Water until the soil is thoroughly moist. Check the plant for water every day and once a week thereafter.
- 8). Mulch with grass clippings. In winter, mulch with leaves.
