How to Propagate a Weeping Willow
- 1). Choose a location for the weeping willow that is close to water. Make sure the spot is away from a house and is not close to water pipes, because when the trees get larger, their roots can clog pipes.
- 2). Dig a square hole with a shovel that is 18 inches wide and deep. Separate the ground with the shovel, and add compost to the soil if the area is too dry.
- 3). Snip a branch off a grown tree with pruning shears. Cut a piece off the tree that is no more than 6 feet tall and at least 1 to 2 inches in diameter at the base.
- 4). Place the branch upright in the hole that you have dug. Cover only the base of the branch with dirt, but enough should be covered so that it is sturdy. Pat down the soil with your hands, and make sure it is firm enough so you cannot take the branch out.
- 5). Water the tree only when there are long dry periods during the first year. Use a shredded or compost mulch near the base to protect the weeping willow during the winter.
