How to Water Wax Begonias

    • 1). Set the wax begonia pot in a drainage saucer. Avoid pots with attached saucers, as they are difficult to empty completely after irrigation.

    • 2). Water the wax begonia when the top half-inch of soil dries. Do not allow the soil to dry completely, as overly dry soil weakens the plants and damages the roots.

    • 3). Irrigate the plant by pouring water onto the soil at the base of the begonia plant. Pour water until it begins draining from the bottom of the pot, indicating the soil is evenly moist.

    • 4). Empty the drainage saucer immediately after watering. Standing water in the saucer soaks back into the soil, causing it to become soggy, which may lead to root rot.

    • 5). Combine a soluble balanced fertilizer with water at half the package-recommended rate before every other watering. Water the begonia with the solution only when the plant is actively growing and flowering in spring and summer.
