The Best Time to Plant Rose of Sharon
- Rose of Sharon is a late bloomer, with buds opening in late July or early August. Ideal planting times for the shrub are mid to late-spring, to give the plant time to establish and take advantage of its summer growing times.
- Rose of Sharon does best in full sun all day, for both growing and blooming. It does not tolerate wet feet and does best in rich, quick-draining soil that retains moisture but doesn't submit the plant to standing water. The plant should be planted in a wide open area that gets complete sun exposure.
- At maturity, Rose of Sharon is cold-hardy and doesn't require much winter protection. The shrub grows to 6 to 8 feet in spread, and requires plenty of space. Provide it with 1 to 2 inches of water a week and prune in the spring.
