How to Grow in a Winter Greenhouse

    • 1). Insulate the north wall of the greenhouse with silver insulation sheets. These sheets catch and reflect sunlight back into the greenhouse, amplifying the amount of light plants receive during the short winter days and raise the temperature.

    • 2). Dig a trench around the edge of the greenhouse that is 1 foot deep. Place polystyrene sheets in the trench and fill it back in with dirt. The polystyrene sheets keep the ground around the greenhouse warmer.

    • 3). Install grow lights over the greenhouse staging. Grow lights raise the temperature of the greenhouse and supplement the sunlight lost during short winter days. Using grow lights makes it easier to grow plants that would otherwise not grow in a winter greenhouse, such as tomatoes.

    • 4). Install a space heater or a heating system in the greenhouse to maintain a constant temperature warm enough for plant growth. Depending on what types of plants you grow, the heat can be lowered; potatoes and spinach, for example, do not need as much heat.

    • 5). Grow plants that are more tolerant of the cold, such as potatoes, cabbage, lettuce and spinach. This makes it less expensive to heat the greenhouse, and helps ensure a more successful harvest.

    • 6). Plant winter greenhouse plants at the end of fall and water them regularly until they're ready for harvest.
