How to Design Playbills
- 1). Choose a word processing or graphic software such as Microsoft Word or InDesign to design your playbill.
- 2). Create a page template that is 8 inches tall by 5 1/2 inches wide. A standard playbill has a cover, a back and 4 pages in between.
- 3). Set the font to Baskerville Old Face.
- 4). Design the cover. Add a 1-inch yellow text box to the top. Type “Playbill” in large, bold, capital letters in the center. In smaller letters, type the name of the playhouse under the word “Playbill”. Add an image that relates to the play below the yellow text box. The image should fill the rest of the page. Within the image insert the name of the play. The font you use for the name of the play does not have to be Baskerville Old Face.
- 5). Fill in page 1 with the basic event information. Center everything. Include the playhouse information, the producers, the title, the director, the composer, the writer, the actors and crew members such as designers, stage managers and choreographers. At the bottom, include any professional affiliations such as the Actor’s Equity Association. Vary font size and use boldface as you see fit to highlight important information. The font used within the playbill is up to you.
- 6). On page 2, list each act, providing a synopsis for each act.
- 7). On page 3 list the cast and major crew members. Include the character portrayed, photographs and biographies.
- 8). Use page 4 for advertising, director's notes and any special thanks.
- 9). Submit your files to a printing company.
