    • 1). Shut the computer down and remove the power cord. Remove the retaining screws from the back of the computer.

    • 2). Locate the case removal lever and use it to remove the computer's cover. For desktop computers, this lever should be on the top of the computer. For tower case designs, the case removal lever will be located on the side of the machine.

    • 3). Look inside the computer case and take note of any accumulated dust and debris. Dust and dirt from the room will often get sucked into the case through the fan, and this accumulation of dust and debris can cause the PC to overheat.

    • 4). Spray compressed air into the computer case to remove any accumulated dust and debris. Concentrate on the area around the computer's fan and power supply. Continue to spray the compressed air into the computer until all accumulated dirt has been removed.

    • 5). Check the tightness of all connections inside the computer. Sometimes the connections to the hard drive, DVD drive and other devices will become loose and that can cause those devices to malfunction. Remove and reseat all the connections going to the hard drives, DVD drives and other onboard devices.
