VGA displays are everywhere.
Dating back to the bygone era of monochrome Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) monitors, VGA became the dominant method for connecting computers to their displays.
Even with the slow migration over to the modern world of DVI-D, HDMI, and Display Port digital interfaces, it is not uncommon to see a VGA port right next to the modern digital ports.
This is a result of the incredible flexibility that allowed the VGA standard to adapt to higher resolutions.
The result is that even at this late date VGA displays can be found actively in use behind the scenes of many applications that we see around us every day.
Of course if VGA had been the solution to all of the display issues there would have been no need for the newer interfaces.
VGA does have some limitations.
One is that the cables are very thick and bulky.
This makes it incredibly impractical to locate the display in another room as many people like to do with clean rooms, promotional displays, and secured rooms.
They are also susceptible to interference which results in resolution degradation and image artifacts over longer distances.
These problems lead to the development of separate solutions such as VGA Extender and VGA Splitter products.
A VGA extender is a simple device consisting of a transmitter and a receiver that convert the VGA signal and amplifies it for transmission over another type of cable such as Category (Cat5/Cat5e/Cat6) network cable.
There are several benefits to this.
First, Cat5e/6 cable is much cheaper than a comparable length VGA cable.
Second, network cabling is available with a shielded twisted pair (STP) option that prevents the signal from interfering with or being interfered by surrounding equipment.
Third, because many of the VGA over Cat5 Extenders are also amplifiers, the signal can be transmitted to displays much further away from the computer than would be possible using only conventional VGA cables without any loss in resolution.
Another important benefit of a VGA Extender is that many of them include a local port.
This allows the administrator to have a display next to the computer as well as the remote display.
Cat5 VGA Splitter Extender products are ideal for applications where a VGA signal needs to be split at the source and displayed on multiple VGA monitors.
The biggest advantage is that the extension is over Cat cables so you don't need to run long and bulky VGA cables which can save users a lot of money especially for larger applications.
