How to Peel a Beatles "Butcher" Cover
- 1). Remove the "Yesterday and Today" vinyl record from the sleeve to prevent it from any potential damage.
- 2). Look at the lower-right corner of the album cover. If the copy of "Yesterday and Today" is a "butcher" cover original version, you will be able to see the image of Ringo Starr wearing a V-neck sweater on the right side of the front cover.
- 3). Check to see if the record contains a seal for a "Gold Record Award." These copies are not original and cannot be peeled.
- 4). Hold the sleeve under a bright light and check for any stains that appear to be caused by water damage. If any stains appear, you should not proceed, as it will cause damage to the record sleeve and depreciate its value.
- 5). Check the lower-right corner of the back of the album sleeve. There should be a number which denotes the pressing plant where the record was created. Records with the number 1, 2, 5 and 6 are alcohol soluble, while those bearing the numbers 12 or 13 will require your own saliva to peel. Other than that change, the steps will be the same.
- 1). Tear off an eight-inch strip of masking tape. Apply it to the center of the glued-on cover, pressing firmly.
- 2). Pull up the masking tape lightly. Part of the glued-on cover will come up with the masking tape, leaving a white paper backing. Repeat this step until the glued-on cover is removed, leaving only the paper backing. Do not remove too much of the paper backing; the more you leave on, the easier it will be to remove with alcohol or saliva.
- 3). Apply a small amount of isopropyl alcohol from a syringe to the glue and paper backing that remains from the glued-on cover. If you have a 12 or 13 numbered album, you should apply small amounts of saliva from your fingertip. Do not apply to more than one square inch of the album cover at a time.
- 4). Use your fingernail to lightly scrape the glue and paper backing. If at any point the "butcher" cover underneath starts to rip, move to another section and try again when that area has dried.
- 5). Continue applying alcohol or saliva and peeling until the original cover and glue have been removed.
