How to Calculate the Coverage for Landscaping Stone

    • 1). Measure the area you intend to fill with landscape stone. Multiply these figures together to find out the square footage of the area. For example, if the area you want to cover is 10 feet by 10 feet, the square footage is 100 square feet.

    • 2). Convert the average thickness of your landscape stone into feet. For example, if you want 3 inches of landscape stone over the entire area, the thickness would equate to 1/4 feet.

    • 3). Calculate the cubic footage of stones needed. Multiply the square footage by the average depth. Using the example above, you would multiply 100 square feet by 1/4 feet to arrive at 25 cubic feet of stones.

    • 4). Divide cubic feet by 27 to arrive at cubic yards. Cubic yards is the common measure used to order landscape stones. For example, 25 cubic feet divided by 27 is 0.93 cubic yards. If you order 1 yard of landscape stone, you will have enough to cover the ground to the desired thickness.
