    • 1). Determine what type of memory card your digital camera requires. Some of the most common types of memory cards required for digital cameras are CompactFlash, Secure Digital, xD memory cards and Micro Drive. Some cameras, such as those under the Sony brand that require the use of a Memory Stick, require a specific brand. Most digital cameras, however, allow owners to choose what brand of memory card to buy. To ensure that you purchase a compatible memory card, consult the camera's instruction manual.

    • 2). Choose the storage size that you would like for the memory card. Memory cards are available in different sizes ranging from 16 MB to 10 GB. The size of the card that you purchase depends on how many pictures you wish to store on the card. A smaller memory size means that the card stores a smaller amount of pictures.

    • 3). Search for the best prices available for the memory card that you need. You can purchase memory cards online and in person, at office supply and electronic stores. Websites including Amazon.com, Google Products (http://www.google.com/products) and Bestbuy.com sell various memory cards. Some show competitor pricing as well. By searching online, you can determine whether buying the memory card will be less expensive that way or from a retail store.
