    Start the character

    • 1). Typical Anime character design depicts people with large heads, large reflective eyes, small noses and mouths and bushy, lustrous hair (See Reference). Produce black and white line art by either drawing your character and scanning it into Photoshop or drawing directly into Photoshop using a computer drawing tablet.

Draw a circle to represent the head. Draw the eyes vertically aligned in the center of the circle. You can draw the eyes any size you prefer, but the larger you draw them, the more likely it is that a viewer will recognize your drawing as Anime.

    • 2). You can represent the mouth and nose with a few simple strokes as long as you align them horizontally with the eyes. Use your favorite Anime characters as inspiration.

    • 3). Typical Anime hair is bushy with large, separate locks. Draw the top of the hair using upward and diagonally-pointing triangles. Draw bangs using downward triangles.

    • 4). Bodies of Anime characters vary from artist to artist, from short to tall or disproportionate to the head. Draw, and dress, the body according to your preference. Hint: Large heads in relation to the body are typically used for comical stories, while tall and slender bodies are often used for serious action or drama.

    Using Photoshop CS3

    • 1). Create a new RGB document in Photoshop. Recommended size of the document is 8 inches by 6 inches at 250 pixels per inch.

    • 2). Place the artwork on a new layer. Make a layer by choosing "New Layer" in the Layers palette. Name the layer "Artwork." Change the blending mode in the Layers palette from "Normal" to "Multiply." This will allow the white areas of your drawing to allow color through the layer.

    • 3). Make a second layer beneath the artwork layer. Name the layer "Color." This layer will contain the color for the drawing. The blending mode for this layer should be set to "Normal."

    • 4). Select the "Colors" layer and using your mouse or drawing tablet, use the paintbrush tool to apply color to the drawing. You will see that the black line art is not affected by the color while the white areas appear colored.

    • 5). When you are satisfied with your drawing, select Layers>Flatten Image, and save your work.
