How to Make Flower Pots With Wood
- 1). Design it. You need to decide if you want it to be round, square or rectangle and the height, width and depth that you want it to be. You'll also need to choose if you want hidden screws to hold it together or some visible rivets. The best way to get design ideas is to look at examples and document what you like and don't like. Take a stroll through your local home improvement store's gardening section or browse online at sites like flowerpotshop.com or simplyplanters.com (see Resources). Write down or draw out your ideas to keep them fresh.
- 2). Buy the supplies. You will need to purchase whatever kind of wood you want to use. Some of the best woods include oak, maple, cherry and cedar. All woods have a different look and feel, so you'll have to shop around at your local lumber yard or home improvement store. Also purchase wood for the frame and bottom and either nails or screws to secure everything together.
- 3). Assemble a frame. You will need to build a frame that will be inside your wood exterior. Start this by cutting out a piece of wood in the shape of the bottom of the pot. Then attach pieces of wood vertically every couple of inches. These can be attached with nails or screws.
- 4). Cover the frame with your exterior boards. Lay the boards on top of the frame and attach using your desired method. Leave tiny gaps between the boards for a little bit of ventilation, but small enough that soil won't escape. You can finish off with a few pieces of wood attached around the top or you can leave it bare, but adding a top will add stability and possibly increase the life of your flower pot.
