    Show Hidden Files

    • 1). Click the "Start" menu and click "Control Panel."

    • 2). Click "Appearance and Personalization" and click "Folder Options."

    • 3). Click the "View" tab at the top.

    • 4). Under "Advanced settings," click "Show hidden files and folders." Click "OK."

    Repair the .PST File

    • 1). Exit Microsoft Outlook if the application is still running.

    • 2). Find the Outlook PST file by first clicking the "Start" menu and clicking "Control Panel." If you see "Control Panel Home," click "User Accounts and Family Safety." If not, click "Mail." Click "Data Files," "Personal Folders" and "Settings."

    • 3). Copy the text that appears in the "Filename" box. This is the location of the PST file. Click "OK" and then "Close" two times.

    • 4). Find the "scanpst.exe" file. Click the "Start" menu and type "scanpst.exe" into the search box. Double-click the file to launch the Inbox Repair tool.

    • 5). Enter the file path that you copied in Step 3 into the "Enter the name of the file you want to scan" input box. Click "Start." When the Inbox Repair tool has finished, click "OK." You should now be able to read, send and receive mail messages without receiving error 0X80040600.
