How to Plant Iceberg Lettuce

    • 1). Plant iceberg lettuce seeds in growing trays in fine soil and keep the trays indoors until the last frost of the season. This gives the plant a head start before the hot weather comes. Seedlings come up in seven to 10 days.

    • 2). Transplant the lettuce seedlings into your garden shortly after the last frost, to ensure the heads mature before the summer. Plant seedlings on a cool day, if possible, and position the seedlings so they are covered by shade.

    • 3). Plant the seedlings 12 inches apart in rows spaced 18 inches apart. Apply a liquid nitrogen fertilizer the same day you transplant the seedlings, just after they are in the ground.

    • 4). Create the shade you need with an umbrella or other accessory if no natural shade is available. Monitor the plants every day as the weather gets warmer and adjust artificial shade accordingly until the lettuce is ready for harvest. Water iceberg lettuce with cool water to keep the soil moist.

    • 5). Harvest your iceberg lettuce when the outer leaves are big and tightly packed around the head.
