Laboratory Power Backup, Essential for Instruments
So, continuous supply of power from AC power line is a must, which we usually get from the power grid. But for different reasons such as natural calamities or others power supply may be cut up for some time. Now a day, to put the power supply in a steady level all laboratories use laboratory battery backup.
As a laboratory battery backup we usually use €uninterruptible power source' or €uninterruptible power supply' which is commonly known as UPS. It is a device which uses the principle of providing continuous backup power when the main power supply is not available or unstable. It is different from normal generators because it provides instant power supply when the power is cut off which is very important for the laboratory instruments while generator takes some time. To conserve power UPS uses DC batteries. These DC batteries become charged when the power is available. The UPS in some cases provides power for a very short period so that one can turn the instruments off properly.
In technical laboratories UPS is generally used for data centers, computers and telecommunications. It can also be used in instruments can cause fatalities or loss of data or interruption of big deals when not shut down properly. UPS are of different designs. Some are made for a single instrument like computers and some are made for supplying power to a whole unit of a laboratory.
Now, we can put all the UPS under three different categories.
€ On-line
€ Line interactive
€ Standby
The on-line UPS works in a method which is called €double conversion'. In this method the power of the normal AC line is rectified to DC and thus conserved in a rechargeable battery. Then when needed the conserved power is supplied to the instrument as AC current. A line interactive UPS connects the inverter with the main line and redirects the AC current to DC current to supply power to the instrument when power is unavailable. In a standby UPS the instrument is usually connected to the main line and when the power is cut off the DC-AC inverter circuitry is turned on and supply required power to the instrument.
With modern technology, fuel cell UPS is a blessing because it uses atomic energy as a power source and can provide continuous power supply to the instruments.
In large laboratories and business industries they use very expensive and sophisticated instruments. A small problem in these instruments can cause big losses or even in some cases life threatening conditions for the employees. So, for the safety and overall wellbeing laboratory battery backup is compulsory for the industries and science laboratories.
