Azaleas & Snails
- Prevent snails from infesting azaleas by removing garden features that serve as attractive breeding sites for snails. Snails often hide under rocks, wooden boards or bricks. Removing these snail shelters helps prevent a large population from developing.
- Gardeners can also place cantaloupe rinds upside down near the base of azalea plants. Every day, gardeners should collect the snails in these traps and destroy them by crushing them or drowning them in soapy water.
- Gardeners use several types of organic snail traps that can work amongst azaleas plants. Push a shallow bowl filled with beer into the ground until the bowl's lip reaches ground level. Snails are attracted by the yeast in the beer and fall into the liquid and die.
- Azalea aficionados can purchase commercially available poisons and baits specifically designed for snails. These aromatic poisons can attract and kill pets and children. Gardeners should use toxic baits with caution and always follow the directions for proper handling.
