How to Find and Repair Leaks in Swimming Pool Plumbing
- 1). Open the compartment lid where the pool's valve assembly and filtration system are located. Typically this will be on the deck of the pool, although in some instances it can be inside a pool shed at one end of the pool.
- 2). Turn the valve on the valve assembly clockwise until resistance is felt. Place the jaws of a pliers around the base of the valve. Twist the pliers to loosen the tubing attached to the valve. Unscrew the tubing with your fingers. Pull the tubing away from the valve.
- 3). Insert the hypodermic needle into the rubber cap on the dye that is included with the dye testing kit. Pull the syringe plunger back to bring dye into the syringe.
- 4). Place the syringe's needle into the hole in the tubing. Inject the dye into the hole. Screw the tubing back on the valve. Tighten the tubing with the pliers.
- 5). Twist the valve's knob counterclockwise to start the water flowing. Keep a lookout to see where dye comes out of the side of the tubing -- this indicates the location of the leak.
- 6). Shut off the water by turning the valve's knob again. Place the pliers against the end of the tubing that has the leak and twist to loosen it from the pipe fitting it is connected to. Twist the tubing free of the pipe fitting and remove it. Discard the tubing.
- 7). Place the replacement tubing in the position that was occupied by the tubing that had a leak. Twist the tubing onto the pipe fitting. Tighten the tubing with the pliers. Restore the flow of water.
