Care for House Bamboos
- 1). Choose a healthy lucky bamboo stalk with deep green leaves. Cut this portion of the stalk to measure no less than 30 inches in length; use a sharp knife of any kind to produce this cut. Take this stalk from the top of the lucky bamboo shoot to promote further growth of the plant.
- 2). Fill the clay bonsai pot with clean rocks or pebbles and push the bamboo shoot down into the rock and pebbles, leaving an inch or two between the end of the bamboo shoot and the bottom of the pot.
- 3). Fill the pot with enough water to submerge an inch or two of the bamboo stalk in water.
- 1). Place the house bamboo in indirect sunlight at a room temperature between 65 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
- 2). Replace the water in the container routinely to prevent the bamboo shoot from rotting. Chiff.com recommends changing the water once per week, while Plant-Care.com recommends changing the water as often as three times per week.
- 3). Fertilize the bamboo as you feel necessary. While The Gardener's Network says fertilizer is unnecessary, Chiff.com recommends occasional application of a mild fertilizer in small amounts to promote growth and health, without allowing the plant to grow excessively.
- 4). Watch the plant for problem signs to prevent decay and death. Yellowing leaves represent a warning sign that the bamboo shoot needs to be moved from direct sunlight or needs watering with fresh spring water, free of salt and fluoride.
