How to Take Cuttings From a Dragon Plant
- 1). Take a cutting from a healthy, well-established plant by cutting a 5-inch long section of stem. Remove any lower leaves from the section, leaving just the upper leaves.
- 2). Fill a plant pot with a mixture of equal parts of peat moss and coarse sand. Water the mix until water drains from the bottom of the pot. Allow time for sufficient drainage.
- 3). Use a sharp knife to cut slits in the bottom of the cutting or to strip small bits of the stem off near the bottom. This is known as wounding and will help roots to develop.
- 4). Dip the cut end of the stem into a liquid or powdered rooting hormone. If using a powdered formula, pack the powder into the wounds of the cutting.
- 5). Stick the cutting into the rooting medium, deeply enough to allow it to stand on its own. If needed, a stake can be used to aid in support.
- 6). Cover the pot with a plastic bag or a clear plastic container. You can use an empty 2 L bottle: cut the top off the bottle and place the remaining part upside down, over the pot.
- 7). Place the pot in an area where it will receive several hours of indirect sunlight each day. Use a fluorescent light, if natural light is not available.
