    Fabric Pattern Design

Create a fabric prototype by painting a pattern on a large piece of white denim or cotton. Design a pattern on paper first and then sketch a larger version onto a dining-table sized piece of fabric. Incorporate fashion elements by choosing colors that compliment the undertones of a person's complexion, for example, gold colors compliment olive skin. The result is a stiff textile painting that can be hung like a tapestry. For a more functional piece of fabric, use washable acrylic-based fabric paints. Paint your pattern with fabric paint and when it's dry, wash it in cold water. The result is a soft, wearable piece of fabric.

    Fashion Painting

Fashion sketches are an integral part of modern fashion. These sketches are usually done by hand with watercolors or created on a computer. Use acrylic paints to accurately illustrate the pieces of clothing you want to create. Sketch the outfit onto a primed canvas and use acrylics to depict your specific fabric choices. Apply thick coats of paint to create a cable-knit texture. Thin out the paint to mimic transparent or silky fabrics. When deciding what color your designs will be, keep in mind that acrylics dry a shade or two lighter than the wet paint color.

    Historical Style Painting

Modern fashion constantly borrows from past trends. Every fashion era, from Ancient Greece to the 1980s, is used as inspiration by today's designers. Depict this in an acrylic painting by choosing your favorite era and redesigning a historical look for the modern woman. Elizabethan collars or 1970s bell bottoms can be repurposed into a modern design. Create a "before and after" painting with the historical look on one side and the modern reinterpretation on the other.

    Mixed-Media Fashion Collage

    • Combine acrylic paint with real fabric and jewelry to create a mixed media collage. Using a sturdy canvas, layer fabric and paint on top of each other and glue on buttons, chains or studs. Start with a clear picture of an outfit in your mind and then deconstruct it until it looks like a messy, abstract painting. You want to capture the essence of an outfit but not the outfit itself. For example, if your outfit is romantic and feminine, use lace and tulle and layer it over pink and white acrylics. Add bows or strings of pearls to create a romantic-feeling collage.
