How to Plant Blue Flag Iris Seeds
- 1). Soak your seeds in a bowl of water. You can soak all your seeds in one bowl, as long as they are all under the surface. Soak them for at least 48 hours, but no longer than two weeks.
- 2). Change the water every day. Pour it through a strainer so you don't lose the seeds. The soaking will remove the husks from the seeds and get them ready for planting.
- 3). Fill a planter box with a 50/50 mix of potting soil and seed-specific mix. Blue flag iris is very hardy in zone 2, so if you live in an area where you can provide that environment, feel free to sow the seeds outside in your garden instead, with soil amendments to support the seeds.
- 4). Top the planting box or plot off with a layer of seed mix, about 1/2 inch deep.
- 5). Plant your seeds. Put 20 to 25 seeds into 1 gallon of soil. Plant them 1/2 inch deep and 1/2 inch apart.
- 6). Water the soil consistently to keep it moist but not wet. Never allow the seeds to dry out.
