How to Operate Dish Network

    • 1). Make sure the coaxial cable that runs down from the Dish Network satellite dish is plugged correctly into the "ANT IN" port on the back of the Dish Network satellite receiver. It cannot be loose or disconnected. This is important to receiving a strong signal.

    • 2). Connect the satellite receiver to your TV. This connection is made with the RCA cable that ships with the receiver. This cable has two sets of prongs, one on either end. Each set has a white, red and yellow prong. Notice that there are matching RCA ports on the back of the satellite receiver and the back of your TV, with one white, one red and one yellow prong. Plug the prongs into the correct ports for proper Dish Network operation.

    • 3). Align your Dish Network satellite dish properly. Accessing the signal meter screen through the satellite receiver menu will allow you to do so. From the menu that appears on your TV after booting up the receiver, choose the "Signal Meter" option. Have someone remain with the meter screen as you check your satellite dish outside.

    • 4). Make slight elevation adjustments to your Dish Network satellite dish by moving the dish up or down slowly every 5 to 7 seconds. After each elevation adjustment, wait for your friend to report back from the signal meter screen, which will be monitoring your adjustments in real time. The signal meter will gauge how close you are to pointing the Dish Network satellite dish to the correct coordinates in the sky. Make adjustments according to the coordinates provided by the signal meter screen. You will be notified by it when a coordinate is sufficiently reached.

    • 5). Make slight azimuth adjustments to the Dish Network satellite dish to complete the alignment process. These movements are left or right adjustments and should also be performed gradually every 5 to 7 seconds, again waiting for signal meter screen reports. Once the meter screen indicates you have hit all the right coordinates, you have correctly aligned the dish for operation.

    • 6). Press the "Guide" button on your Dish Network remote control after turning on both your TV and the satellite receiver. This will bring up the television channel menu, with channel listings by half-hour and the corresponding programs being played. Navigate through this guide using the arrow buttons on the top of the remote in order to choose programs you wish to watch. Click the "OK/Select" button to change to the highlighted program.
