How to Fill in a Garden Pond

    • 1). Drain the pond with a bottom intake siphon drain if your garden pond has one. If your garden pond does not have a siphon drain, use a pond vacuum to remove all of the water.

    • 2). Clear out the existing items in the pond in early fall before the harsh frost sets in, or late winter when the weather is milder. This prevents any hibernating animals that are on the bottom of the pond from being suddenly exposed to the extremely cold weather.

    • 3). Fill the hole where the pond was with sand until you have 2 feet left at the top. If you prefer, you can use dirt to fill up the pond area.

    • 4). Pour top soil on top of the sand and make sure it is level with the surrounding land.

    • 5). Plant flower seeds, grass seeds or other plants to cover the area where your pond once existed.
